a) Ph. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition
For 17 years, the Department of International Studies of the Faculty of School of AUTH has been training annually a group of students to participate in the abovementioned international competition (which is considered to be the top among similar worldwide competitions). The team of AUTH (which had defeated in the past the Law and Political School of UoA) is usually among the 85 groups selected by a total of around 600 universities from around the world. The competition is held every spring in Washington, in English language, before distinguished internationalists and judges. Participants represent -as lawyers- countries that have appealed to the International Court of Justice in Hague and produce their arguments before the virtual court or answer the questions submitted by the judges. Written (memorials) and oral submissions are combined to produce the total score .
The group of participants is selected every year after the September exams, through written and oral tests in English language. The team preparation requires a lot of time, co-ordinated group research, writing and familiarization with Legal English. In February the preliminary round takes place between the team of AUTH, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Panteion University. The winning team participates in the final stage of the Competition in Washington. The team of AUTH has represented Greece in Washington in almost all (except 3) competitions held until now.
The team of AUTH has achieved the following accomplishments until now:
2004: 4th prize in memorials
2005: 1st prize in memorials – Two of the group members were ranked among the 100 best speakers (10th & 35th place).
2007: 10th position in memorials – (43th speaker position).
2008: 6th position in memorials – (45th speaker position).
2009: Participation in the semi-final stage (6th place), 6th position in the memorials – (26th & 58th position of speakers).
2014: Participation in the final stage (16th place)
2016: 8th place among about 600 Law Schools (written part)
In addition, many of our team members are ranked among the best speakers.
b) DM Harish Memorial International Moot Court Competition
With a similar selection and preparation process as the abovementioned, the Department trained in the academic year 2012-2013 a three-member group of students to participate in the DM Harish Memorial International Moot Court Competition, held annually in Mumbai, India. In this Competition, our students received the Written Submissions Award. Our Faculty of Law was distinguished in the organization of 2013 and won the 1st place in the written part and the 2nd in the oral part. In the end of the Competition, the aim to continue this effort in the next academic years was expressed.
