Award in memoriam of AUTH Professor Elias Karantonis and Demetrios Karantonis, Dr. iur.

ANNOUNCEMENT

A monetary award of 3,000 euros shall be awarded each year to a senior student of the Law School, in memory of Demetrios Karantonis, Dr. iur., graduate of the Law School as well as of the School of Economics of the University of Tübingen (Law School G.A. decision no. 4/12-3-2013), as well as in memory of AUTH Professor Elias Karantonis.

Terms

The awardee must:

  • Be a graduate of the Law School
  • Have completed studies in four academic years
  • Have completed studies during the academic year of the award, following the September examination period
  • Have graduated with the top GPA (in the event of a “tie”, the award goes to the student with the greatest financial need)
  • Military school students are not eligible for the award

Short biographical note of Demetrios Karantonis

Demetrios Karantonis was born in Thessaloniki on 20.12.1977 and passed away on 26.02.2011. He was the son of Elias Karantonis, professor at the AUTH School of Economics, and Kyriaki Karantoni, high school teacher. Following his graduation from the 6th High School of Kalamaria, he studies Social Economics (Volkswirtschaftslehre) at the School of Economics of Eberhardt Karls Universität Tübingen in Germany. He was awarded the title of Diplom Volkswirt with an overall GPA of 1.68. His thesis on the “The Greek competition policy” received honors (1.3). He completed his military service between 05.08.2005-05.08.2006. He was admitted as a Ph.D. candidate at Eberhardt Karls Universität Tübingen in November 2006. Having successfully completed all requisite courses, he wrote a dissertation entitled “The importance of presumptions in German and Greek law on mergers” and was subsequently acclaimed a Doctor of Law (Dr. iur.) magna cum laude. In January 2011, he submitted a paper entitled “A more economic approach to the European checks on mergers” to the Commercial Law Review, published in volume 62 (2011) of the Review. His next paper on the comparison of the theoretical models of F.A. von Hayek and K. Kastoriades on the birth of institutions remained incomplete owing to his premature death.
